Special Opportunities and Programs for Undergraduate Students in Political Science
The Department of Political Science offers several special opportunities for students with particular interests and programs for high achieving students in both bachelor's degree programs. These opportunities and programs draw upon special strengths of the Department, the College of Liberal Arts, and the University to create an outstanding undergraduate experience.
The Department has a strong commitment to the University Honors Program. Each semester the Department offers several introductory and advanced courses specially designed for honors students. Students qualifying for honors courses may also take special courses in their junior and senior years designed to introduce the discipline from a broad perspective and to expose students to cutting edge research in political science. High achieving students should plan to pursue the University's senior thesis option in which students work with a faculty mentor in a year long research program on a topic of their choice. This research program results in a written senior honors thesis reporting research findings. This course of study is highly recommended for students considering Graduate Studies in political science, public administration, or other related areas. Students interested in options for honors students should contact the Political Science Undergraduate Advising Office and the University Honors Office (979)845-1957.
Political science provides an excellent undergraduate major for students interested in pursuing a Pre-Law Track for undergraduates. Pre-law studies in the Department provide a broad based liberal arts education recommended by most law schools. Courses in the pre-law track are designed to meet four main objectives. First, courses attempt to increase the probability of being admitted to law school with recommended courses in analytical thinking, writing, and mathematics that are helpful on the LSAT. Second, courses sharpen communications skills necessary for success in law school and as a practicing attorney. Third, courses in public law and business law introduce students to legal concepts, foundation elements in the Constitution, and legal methodologies. And fourth, courses cover topics not often addressed in law school but which are helpful in pursuing a legal career -- i.e. public policy, accounting, and judicial processes. Students interested in pre-law education should consider honors work and should contact the Office of Professional Advising (979)847-8938. |
