FORMATTING GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTS
Please follow these formatting rules when preparing your final manuscript:
- We prefer MS Word Documents for PCs, but we can accept WordPerfect Documents as well.
- Number pages consecutively throughout.
- Single-sided pages.
- Approximately 100-word abstract.
- The abstract is left justified and italicized (if there is a title within the abstract, do not underline or italicize). It is double-spaced and the first line indented.
- Brief biographical paragraph describing current affiliation, research interests, or recent publications.
- No underlines at all. Titles should be italicized instead (including references).
- All text Times New Roman.
- All text, except headings and title and author, in size 12 font (references and notes included).
- All text double-spaced (except titles).
- Two spaces after the punctuation at the end of every sentence.
- All text except some headings, title, and author is left justified.
- First line of every paragraph indented.
- References are in-text format, and should follow the American Political Science Review.
- References and footnotes should appear on separate pages, double-spaced at the end of the text.
- References in the text should include page numbers where they are appropriate.
- Footnotes are reserved for providing substantive information. (This is important. Many authors are asked to change their footnotes into references.)
- Tables and figures should also appear on separate pages at the end of the manuscript.
- The title, author, and author affiliation are at the top of the article, single-spaced, and bold.
- The title is centered in upper and lower case, bold, font size 18, and single-spaced.
- Author’s name is centered in upper and lower case, bold, font size 15.
- Author’s affiliation is in upper and lower case, italicized (not bold), with font size 13.
- Long quotes are indented 0.5 on both left and right margins, and there is 6 points above and below.
- Put more complicated figures in MS Excel.
HEADINGS
There are different font and spacing specifications for each heading to allow the publisher to easily determine your heading levels.
- Level A: Headings are bold, centered, font size 15. Make the space above the heading 12 points, and the space below 6 points.
- Level B: Headings are bold, left justified, font size 14. Make the space above 6 points and do not indent.
- Level C: Headings are bold, they are italicized, font size 13, followed by a period, two spaces, and then the first line of text for that section. They are not indented. Make the space above the heading 6 points.
- Level D: Headings are bold, font size 12, and followed by a period, two spaces, and then the first line of text for that section. They are indented like the first line of paragraphs.
- The References and Notes sections have a Level A heading.
