Cary J. Nederman is professor of political science. His research concentrates on the history of Western political thought, with a focus on Greek, Roman, and early European ideas up to the seventeenth century. He focuses on the relationship between historical traditions and contemporary theoretical concerns. Nederman is presently pursuing several lines of research, including book-length projects on Machiavelli and on the medieval reception of classical political ideas.

Nederman is the author or editor of approximately 20 books. Among his recent volumes are Princely Virtues in the Middle Ages, 1200-1500 (Brepols, 2007); John of Salisbury (Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies, 2005); Heresy in Transition (Ashgate, 2005); Speculum Sermonis: Interdisciplinary Essays on the Medieval Sermon (Brepols, 2004); Talking Democracy: Historical Approaches to Rhetoric and Democratic Theory (Penn State, 2004); English Political Thought in Early Fourteenth-Century England (Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies, 2003); Rhetoric and Renewal in the Latin West 1100-1540 (Brepols, 2003); and Worlds of Difference: European Discourses of Religious Toleration, c.1100-c.1550 (Penn State, 2000). He has also published approximately 100 journal articles and book chapters, including contributions to the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Political Theory, Journal of the History of Ideas, History of Political Thought, Speculum, and many other leading journals in political science, history, philosophy, and medieval studies. His scholarship is widely cited in book and article literature. In addition, he was an Associate Editor of the New Dictionary of the History of Ideas and presently is helping to edit the Cambridge Dictionary of Political Thought.

Nederman previously taught at York University (1983-1984) and the University of Alberta in Canada (1984-1986) and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand (1986-1990), as well as at Siena College (1991-1992) and the University of Arizona (1992-2000) in the United States. He served as Associate Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Political Science Department at Arizona, as well as the Director of Graduate Studies in political science at A&M from 2003 to 2006. He has received several awards in recognition of his teaching and advising excellence.

At present, Nederman serves on the Editorial Boards of several prominent international journals and is a coeditor of the book series Disputatio published by the Belgian publisher Brepols. He co-founded Politicas: Society for the Study of Medieval Political Ideas, as well as the Cactus League (Arizona) and Lone Star (Texas) Chapters of the Conference for the Study of Political Thought. He has been a research fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies of the International Institute at the University of Michigan and a teaching fellow at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, England. He has received a Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award and currently is a Fulbright Senior Specialist; in addition, he holds grants from the Australian Research Council’s Network for Early European Research. He holds an on-going appointment as a Research Associate at the Center for the History of European Discourses at the University of Queensland, Australia.
